Background Songs

If you have Outlook Express, when you send a message, you will notice at the top of the window a 'Format' selection. Click on it if you want to send a message with background picture, colour and sound and you can choose what you want to add to your email. One tip: the 'Sound' selection is set to 'wav', but just click on the little arrow beside the files of type box and you'll see other selections.

TIP #005......ALLPSR

Rhythm Breaks

There is a feature of rhythm breaks which can increase the number of variations. To make rhythms as interesting as possible, try including regular breaks rather than allowing the same variation to trundle along too long. You can hit the break buttons at different points within the bar instead of only at the beginning. It is possible to get 4 different break patterns by hitting beats 1,2,3 or 4. Often a simple 1 beat break sounds effective by hitting beat 4 in a bar.

TIP #008......640/740

FADE OUT AND RETARD

Regarding the fade out at the end of a song. On the 640/740 you cannot fade out the whole song at once . If you record the accompaniment first, when you near the end of recording press the ACMP/SONG VOLUME button and either use the data wheel or the -/NO to decrease the volume shown in your display until it reaches zero. The fade out in your accompaniment will then be recorded. If you are multitracking use the same process but press the mixer button this will fade out your voice R1, R2 or L1 whichever is selected.

PSR9000 SONG DIRECTORY

For saving a 'Song Directory' you can save 5 different Directories in the 'Song File Directory' from your Hard Drive, in buttons 1, 11, 111, 1V and V, I would suggest to leave button 1 defaulted to the Floppy Disk so that if you want to use a floppy disk, just press the number 1 button and use the other 4 buttons defaulted to different 'Song Directories from your Hard Drive, (you can store up to 250 songs from each of the HD Directories. All you need to do is to, lets say, store a Hard Drive Directory in number 2 button of the 'Song File Directory'.
1, Press 'Song Player' and number 2 button.
2, Press 'Popup' and select the first partition of the Hard Drive.
3, Press the 'In' button to move the Directories into the Centre Column.
4, Select which Song Directory you want and press 'Next'
5, A message will say "The directory has been changed, etc) press 'OK' You then can press the 3rd button and select another Song Directory etc. then the 4th button, then the fifth button to store other directories in those buttons. To memorise them to be stored, press the 'A' (musical notes) button on the top left of the main page and press 'Backup' (this is only to save the changes that you have made, not a full Backup) failing to do this would result in the directories not being saved. You can also save up to 250 styles from a single Hard Drive Directory in the 'Disk Direct' button, -:
1, Press the Auto Accomp button 'On' and press 'Popup'
2, Select the styles Directory from the Centre Column (you will see them in the 'Contents' section)
3, Press 'Next' and a message will say "The directory has been changed, etc) press 'OK' To memorise them to be stored, press the 'A' (musical notes) button on the top left of the main page and press 'Backup'

Touch Sensitivity

Use Initial Touch/touch sensitivity to get the feel of a song . You will find after the adjustments, your music will have more light and shade as you play and sound ten times better.

On thePSR 740 - There is a Touch toggle button and the sensitivity can be adjusted from 1 to 127 only. The default is 100.

On the PSR9000/PRO If you press the 'Function' button and go to 'Controller' then 'Panel Controller' and set Left, Right 1. Right 2, Right 3 on the 9000/Pro (or Lead on the 8000 or the 2 voices on the other keyboards) set them to 'ON' and select, Hard 2, Hard 1, Normal, Soft 1 or Soft 2, depending how you play.

TIP #012......ALLPSR .

Intros and Endings

There are many ways to use intros and endings. Sometimes, you may listen to intros and they will inspire a song. Try to listen to major and minor keys. Use also intros that are not 'fixed', meaning the ones that you can add chords to, because often the intro does not fit with the idea you may have or the chords progression does not correspond to the feeling. Listen to the intros and see how many songs you can think of for that particular intro. " Intros & endings " can also be used part way through tunes as "bridges" (if using an "ending" .......press a variation button just before the "end" & the rhythm will continue ). Also, it is possible to alter voices (& tempo ) to fit different tunes You may wish to mute the parts which are not required........and whatever you do....enjoy your music ! Keep pressing buttons (& notes ) and see what happens ! , CV./HD. Another "trick" to check out is changing the tempo of a style. Making Fast styles Slow or Slow styles Fast is often like hearing a totally different style. Further, if you mute all but, say, the rhythm, bass, and one chord of a style it can also sound quite "different". Don't look at the first chord of the first measure of the song. Look at the LAST chord used in the song. That one usually sounds best. You can mess around and see how you like changes. Do the intro in MINOR instead of major, etc. EXPERIMENT.Press Intro/Ending and just let a few notes play before going back to the main, or press Fillin repeatedly, etc., etc. BG.

TIP #013......9000 .

Dyslexic Disks/Keys?

Hello, First my PowerMac began to give some read errors, then it wouldn't read the PC's, then not read the Mac formatted disks. (Mac service man said "new floppy drive needed!" Not cheap for a Mac. So, I took a risk. I paid $7.00 at Office Depot for the wet cleaning disk. After several times through it began to read the PC disks. Then, it began to read the Mac disks. Saved lots. Then, a week later my 9000 (not then a year old) began to give me read errors, then not at all recognizing the floppy. A trip through the cleaning disk (lots of 2 second start/stops) and it works perfectly. Perhaps I got some bad disks that affected both. While I'm at it. My 9000 stopped recognizing the C in the left hand. It scrambled a lot of chord recognition. Yamaha's answer: "Serviceman" My Solution: A can of air blaster with the straw directed into the small slot that gives access to the contact strip (right next to the upper part of each key. Works perfectly now for months. Dennis Hooker

Solo Playing

Here's another trick you may not know: playing any three adjacent notes (such as C, C#, D) below the split while in fingered mode with the arranger running will immediately stop everything except the drums. To resume the chords and bass, just play another chord. DonM
Hi, I have a tip which follows on from tip 14. I don’t whether this is common knowledge, if it is, please ignore my ramblings. I was quite excited by it anyway !!! I just realised by accident the other day, if you hold down three adjacent keys as stated, but also hold down a fourth in the bass, you get a rhythm with just a bass line played over the top. For example: G1 C2 C#2 D2 plays cancel/G

TIP #015......9000 .

FILL-IN AND STORE

The way I play the Fill-in's is by using the sustain (FC5) pedal which can be assigned to the registration bank buttons, on the Pro there are 32 different types of functions including OTS + and OTS - on SW1 and SW2 footswitches you can assign two switches to each of the buttons in the 64 memory banks, you can assign -:
Fill Down. Self Fill. Fill Break. Fill Up. These can be stored in the registration banks, to do this let's say you want to start with button 1 of bank 1 (always press your bank button first with the 'Freeze' button OFF to retain your voices and style that are stored in there) -:

1, Press the 'Function' button and 'C' controller, this brings you to the 'Foot Controller' page.
2, Press the 'C' button to highlight number 2, SW1 (footswitch 1)
3, Just to make sure, press your bank number 1 and button number 1 to retain your settings in there.
4, Scroll down to your chosen fill-in or whatever and then press the Red memory button and button 1 of the registration bank.
5, Your new function is now stored in button 1.
6, Press your number 2 button first, again to retain your settings in there and go through the same procedure etc.
When you have completed what you want to do, don't forget to make a Backup of your new settings.
Vince, Music Man.

TIP #017......PSR530 and 8000 .

PSR530 Links

here's my little contribution. on the psr 530, you can have an OTS link, just like the psr1000 and the psr2000. once you press the OTS button, the 4 registration buttons now act as the four OTS. buttons 1 and 2 automatically change the beat to Main A and 3 and 4 changes it to Main B. hope this helps. Zack
>>>>>>>> This feature has been on the 8000 almost 5 years ago, OTS (One Touch Settings) buttons 1 and 2 are assigned to Main A, and OTS buttons 3 and 4 are assigned Main B, with the 'Freeze' button OFF. Also with the PSR 8000 if you have the 'Freeze' button OFF and using the Pre-set styles you can have 4 different intros, by pressing the OTS button 1, then OTS button 2, which are on Main A, then press OTS button 3, then OTS button 4 which are on main B, so by pressing any of the 4 OTS buttons with the 'Freeze' button OFF, you will have 4 different intros, 4 different variations and 4 different endings, the 9000 and the Pro have only 3 intro's and endings. Perhaps the 530 and other keyboards with Main A and Main B also have 4 variations etc? Vince Cochran

Saving Custom Voices PSR9000

SAVING CUSTOM VOICES PSR9000 1, Copy the custom voices to a floppy disk, click on the floppy with the right mouse and make a folder, call it, e.g. Custom.usr If you don't do this the keyboard won't read it.
2, Move the custom voices into the Custom.usr folder in your floppy.
3, Load the floppy into the keyboard and press the 'Disk/SCSI' button and 'Load From Disk'
4, Highlight the FD from the 'Device' column and press 'Next' it will say "Checking"
5, Here you have 2 options Group or Individual, if you haven't got any custom voices you can select Group and it will load then all by pressing the 'Next' button twice.
6, If you want to load one at a time press Individual and you can overwrite some of your existing voices by pressing the 'Next' button and selecting from the 'Contents' section and highlighting a place in the 'Destination' section where you want to store your new voice.

TIP #020.....TYROS,PSR2000, PSR9000 .

LEFT VOICE FREEZE OUT

LEFT VOICE FREEZE OUT What I wanted to do is Freeze the 'left voice' when the auto accompaniment is on: 'running'. The GOOD news is that I recently found out the TYROS in fact DOES allow you to accomplish this. Claude (France), actually tested it out on his new Tyros and confirms it WORKS ! Here are the procedures:
1) Select (checkmark) only the STYLE parameter in the Freeze Parameters Window. Be sure to leave the VOICE parameter unchecked.
2) Turn on (activate) the Freeze button
After performing the above, you can select any Style and any of its 4 OTS registrations and all OTS voice setups will change EXCEPT the 'left' voice.
NOTE: Not only the Tyros, but the PSR2000 & 9000pro as well, allow you to freeze just the 'left voice' in the same manner. - Scott

WORDS AND MUSIC?

Using www.musicrobot.com is a real help for connecting song titles with the music. Also, if you go to www.google.com , you can type " LYRIC 'blah blah' " (only put quotation marks around the song title) and you'll almost always get the lyrics for a song! But even better, this works if you can only remember a bit of the lyric!!!! (you can type in a few distinctive words from a phrase in the song -- like "Have You Heard"). But this doesn't work for a totally fungible phrase like "I love you" ;) Now, also at google, if you type "MIDI 'blah, blah' (again, type only the title or phrase from the song in quotation marks) you can usually find a .mid that you can listen to. Midis to Registration

Mid to Registration When you want to save a .mid in registration memory do this:- Insert a floppy disk with midi songs on it or select a midi song that has been saved to the 'User' area. Now open up the"Registration Bank" by pressing the 'J' button on the PSR 2000. Create a "New" bank. (You can give the Folder a personalized name if you want to) Make sure all your Keyboard settings are the way you want them ie., Main/Layer/Left voices, Foot Pedal settings, Style, Multi-Pad, Vocal Harmony settings, Volume settings, etc., to play along with the midi song if you wish. Then press the "Memory" button on the far right of the Keyboard and press the number "1" button of the "Registration Memory". It will ask you if you want to "Save the Song" along with the other settings. Choose "Yes" to save the song. Then save the song to the "User" area. ( PS: Make sure you "Save the new Registration file you just created in the "Registration Bank" area or the registration will be LOST when you turn off your Keyboard.) When you call up that Registration next time the midi song will also load with the registration. Best regards, Mike .

TIP #0024......PSR2000 and 9000/PRO .

PERFORMANCE TRICKS

There are some other little Yamaha tricks also. Pressing three adjacent keys (while in fingered mode) stops everything except the drums. The Arranger starts again when you hit a chord. When you hit an ending or intro by mistake, pressing a variation button gets you out of it. If your Yamaha has auto-fill, pressing the variation button twice quickly will change variations without fill. You can use Intros as breaks (not possible on many other brands). You can start a song with the Ending (press a Variation as the last part of the Ending plays). Many people may not know that pressing plus and minus buttons at the same time gives the factory default settings for most functions (tempo, transpose, etc.). Also often overlooked is the direct access button. Press the DA button and then the button or pedal that you need help with. For example to get to Fingering Mode, press Direct Access and the AutoAcc button. To change footswitch settings, press DA and then the footswitch. I've noticed that the Vocal Harmonizer on the 2000 will work if you press a left hand chord, even when the autoacc. is not running. Previous models didn't do this. On several PSRs, pressing the style category button repeatedly will change pages of style listings. Same with sounds. You can program the Talk button to give you a totally different mic sound. It doesn't have to be used just for Talk. These are just a few things that come to mind that may be helpful. DonM .

Scratched Keys?

Hi, thought this might be useful to many. Keyboard keys scratch removal. Found a very good product to do scratch removal. I used a car polish product....Turtlewax..Finish 2001..liquid. The wax version probably works as well. It has a very fine, mild abrasive, won't scratch. Probably a lot of other car finish products would work as well. I used a "Q tip" to apply it & rub along the scratch and a soft cloth to remove. Takes some elbow grease in some cases but won't mar. Phil Mahoney Broomfield, CO

TIP #26......ALLPSR

WindowsXP and Your Music

Got this from one of the Yamaha sites: Windows XP and music. When working on a PC with Windows XP there are a few things to consider if you want to use the PC as professional music workstation. On an ideal professional music system you do not need any games or office programs, any software you do not need for making music should not be installed on the computer. You also should be cautious when using internet on your music PC – regarding virus attacks and downloading unsafe software programs. Windows XP installs a few things in the startup folder that you do not need. First you should get rid of the Windows Messenger, as this program likes to run always in the background. You can open the windows messenger when clicking with the right mouse key on the messenger symbol in the taskbar and choosing “open”. You can also find the windows messenger in the program files folder on drive C. Once opened choose the menu “tools” and then “options”. Choose “preferences” and uncheck all options, especially “run this program when windows starts” and “allow this program to run in the background”. Click on OK and close the program choosing the menu “file” and then click “close”. The windows messenger is most probably not the only program running in the background. To check, what programs are running you should do the following: Click on start in the windows taskbar and then “run”. Type in “msconfig”. Choose “startup”. Here you will find a list of programs that are started as soon as you run windows. It does not make a difference, if you uncheck all – your computer will work without any problem. We suggest to leave the programs related to your sound devices, e.g. the mLAN manager, and eventually virus scanning software checked and uncheck all that you do not seem to need, especially Office programs. You can do nothing wrong when trying around different settings here. Every time you have made new settings and clicked on OK you have to restart your computer to make the settings active. After restart a Windows message appears. Check the box to avoid that this message appears every time you start up Windows XP. It also helps to deactivate virus scanning programs when working with your music software. We suggest to turn it off directly in the taskbar and not to uncheck it in the startup configuration. Most virus programs can be deactivated when clicking on the respective symbol in the taskbar and the choosing “exit” or “close”. Every program running in the background uses CPU power and memory of your computer – CPU power and memory that you need for your digital audio workstation. But even a bigger problem is that any programs running in the background can cause serious audio dropouts or crackle noises. There are more things you can do to optimize your PC. Click on start, select the control panel and click on “system”. Choose the “advanced” file and click on the performance settings button. Check in the upcoming window “Adjust for best performance”. After that choose the “advanced” file. In the processor handling settings check “background services”. This setting is recommended by most audio software manufacturers for optimal performance when running their programs. Click on OK to apply the settings you have made. Choose the file “Remote” and uncheck “Allow remote assistance invitations to be sent from this computer”. After that choose the file “Automatic Updates” and check the box “Turn off automatic updating”. Click “OK” to apply the changes. On an optimized audio computer you also do not need a screen saver. Right click on the desktop, choose “screen saver” and set to none. Then select the monitor power options, choose the file hibernation and uncheck the box. These are some fundamental settings to run Windows XP optimized for audio applications. More useful tips can be found here: www.musicxp.net.

TIP #027......TYROS

FREEZE

Any Tyros owner who has ever used registrations as eight additional voices while playing a song and has forgotten to turn "freeze" on, knows the shock of having your song change styles and tempo in the middle. If you use the right kind of "style" you can eliminate this problem. This is based on the fact that all registrations attach to the style in place when they are created or modified. The secret is the "style" you pick to create them. 1. Pick a "style" that isn't permanently in your keyboard that you have on a floppy disk. I prefer one I dislike and will never use. Load this "style" in your keyboard and "freeze" it while you're editing or creating your registrations. 2. Complete your registrations and "save" them. Name them and treat them like any other registrations. 3. Remove the disk with the "style" you used and leave it out of the keyboard. Load any new style you plan on using and turn off "freeze". 4. Load your new registration bank - leave "freeze" off. 5. Press any of the eight registrations - you will get all the available information contained in your registration including "Multi-Pads" and "Left" voice. Since you no longer have the "style" the registration was created with in your Tyros, it will leave whatever you have in place and won't effect it at all. Be sure you use a style on a disk you can completely remove from your keyboard. If you use one in "preset", "User", or "HD", it will remember where it is and find it when you call it up. Ken Winter

TIP #028......PSR9000 TYROS .

GROUP HARMONY

I'm an ex-trombone player who bought a Tyros. I figured I could play lead (flute, violin…) parts with the musicians at Church and practice at home on the other features of the Tyros. For playing lead parts I found that taking the PMOD and most AMOD out the modulation wheel and raising the AMPLITUDE to the 80-90 range helped to give a smooth volume variation when using the Mod wheel. If the patch doesn't have much vibrato, I add it to aftertouch. Nice. BUT HERE'S MY BIG DISCOVERY!! Pardon the shouting. Many here may already know about this. I love the Harmony/Echo feature when playing Styles. I'm not good at multi finger right hand harmonies especially when using the left hand for chords when playing Styles. I only found about 10 Styles that I liked. It is amazing the way the harmonies match the instrument groups. The Musicians at Church tend to drop beats, add measures and the tempo varies. No way to use the Styles with them which was a shame because Harmony/Echo feature would have filled in So nicely. I tried picking a Style, then not starting the style while playing chords with the left hand and doing Harmony/Echo with the right. It did not work correctly this way. Then Eureka! I figured it out. Pick any Style. It makes no difference. Turn the Style volume to ZERO. Turn on the AMCP and the Harmony/Echo buttons then hit the start button. You will hear nothing. When the music starts ignore the flashing lights and do the left hand chords (I use the AI 2 finger) still hearing nothing. When you start playing the single notes with the right hand you have the Harmony/Echo feature working! The musicians can speed up, skip beats, repeat choruses and you can stay right with them! TIP #029......TYROS and perhaps 2000,3000?

LYRICS AND CHORD DISPLAY

Wow, with Thanks to Arnos (SZ member Impuls) for his terrific Tip. I've now learned it's possible to easily create & display custom lyrics (and chords) on the Yamaha Tyros while performing in auto-accompaniment mode, of which is my prefered style of arranger keyboard playing. This method of Lyric Display utilizes the Tyros' ability to create personal decorative background bmp files to appear in the LCD display window's background. I don't believe Yamaha intended this feature for displaying LYRICS & CHORDS at all, but because of the ingenuity of people like Arno, figured out how to utilize it for this. In Adobe Photoshop, you can quickly enter lyrics and optional chords, and then save this as a .bmp file (640x480) matching the screen view aspect ratio of the Tyros LCD screen. If you don't have Photoshop, you can import a Word File into MSPaint instead. I then created a folder on the Tyros Hard Drive (titled: Lyrics-Chords) to store/access these custom lyric .bmp files. Next, create a 'blank named' Tyros Song File. The reason this is required is that whatever name is given will appear in front (on top) & obscure the Lyrics. Unfortunately it's not possible to create a completely blank name because it must include a least one character. Since a period (.) is not allowed, I named it with the comma (,) character, next tiniest character. I then assigned this Song the aptly titled Tyros 'icon' graphic: "ABC Lyrics". In addition, I now have this SONG automatically called up when I turn on the Tyros: via Preset Startup Registration. Now, at anytime, when playing the keyboard, by simply selecting: 'LYRICS' (B button), and then BACKGROUND (#8 toggle button) in the Tyros MAIN DISPLAY window, I can quickly call up the lyrics to any .bmp lyric/chord file stored in the Tyros Hard Drive's: 'Lyrics-Chords' folder. Song Lyrics(with optional chords) to other songs are easily called up in the same manner at any time. In addition to lyrics & chords, I add arranger keyboard specific instructions as well. This may include: Song Key, Reg Numbers, and specific places in song to trigger them; specific intro/endings; etc. So far, I've created 6 lyrics files and tried it out during a performance, and it works great. The only drawbacks are that the comma (,) of which I had to name the SONG FILE might obsure one character or letter displayed (see 'Song Lyrics Display w/chords' pics below which HIGHLIGHT this problem), and the amount of screen space (real estate) for lyrics is more limiting then I would prefer. Still, I think this specific adapted Lyric Display feature could be easily enhanced by Yamaha, of which might include window scroll or a one button press to assess more pages. I don't know if it's too late or not, but this feature would be a welcome addition for Tyros2. Ok, enough yak yak. Confucious says a pic is worth a thousands, so here are some Tyros LCD Screen shots: Go to:http://www.synthzone.com/ubbs/Forum37/HTML/011255.html and you will see the whole feature. Click here and download. I hope other Tyros owners, & perhaps PSR3000/PSR2000/2100 owners as well, will find this 'end-user adapted' Lyric Display feature as useful as I have. Please let me know what you think. Thanks again Arno. Scott Yee.

Later observation from Kim Winther,Denmark:- "In TIP029 use a SPACE instead of a comma. Also you can store your bitmap in a registration. You have to save your bitmap in a midi file and then save the midi file along with your registration. Be aware of that Styles with DSP effects will loose the effect next time you recall the registration. To get around that you have to recall the registration and freeze the Song only. Then save the registration and next time you recall your registration it will load the midifile which contains the BMP file. You have to make one midi file per BMP. I have made almost 400 now and it works perfect. " ALso an observation from Michael Bedesem:- If you go to the Lyrics screen in Tyros, you will see a button for selecting the background. If you have a bmp stored on the User, removable media, or HD, you can tab to it and select it. The score setting is saved along with a song. Regards, Michael
